Common Missing Items In ITIN Tax Return Packages

ITIN tax return packages are detail-sensitive. Small gaps can create extra questions, delays, or rework before the file can move forward.

Unclear Federal Tax Purpose

An ITIN requires a U.S. federal tax purpose. The package should show why the applicant needs a U.S. taxpayer identification number and which return or tax matter connects to it.

A vague request for an ITIN is not the same as a complete file.

Incomplete Identity Facts

Applicant name, date of birth, citizenship, foreign address, mailing address, and identity-document facts should be checked against the current Form W-7 instructions.

Do not wait until final review to discover a name mismatch or missing address fact.

Mixed Tax Years

Prior returns, current returns, notices, and income forms should be separated by year. Canadian clients and foreign applicants often have multiple years in one folder.

A clean year-by-year folder reduces confusion.
